About the Agile Alliance Board of Directors

What is Agile Alliance?

Agile Alliance is a nonprofit international organization dedicated to promoting the concepts of Agile software development as outlined in the Agile Manifesto. It is governed by a 10-member Board of Directors which meets periodically to guide our direction.

We are a thriving and diverse community of nearly 70,000 who share your passion for Agile values, principles, and practices.

Our members enable the Alliance to offer a wealth of resources, international events, and community groups to help Agile practitioners reach their full potential and deliver innovative solutions. What is the Agile Alliance Board?

The Board of Directors is comprised of ten directors. It oversees policy decisions affecting the operation of Agile Alliance, approves Member Initiatives and annual budgets, and other typical board responsibilities. As we are a policy-focused board, we rely on Agile Alliance staff and member volunteers to perform the work.

We meet monthly. Eight of those meetings are one-hour calls to discuss progress on topics before the Board. We meet in person three times a year for a long weekend, twice in North America and once outside of North America. We also meet the Sunday before and the Friday after the annual Agile20xx conference.

What will you do as a Board member?

There is no standard experience as an Agile Alliance Board member. What you do depends on what you’re passionate about and how much time you have to devote to Board work.

• Board members discuss topics at hand during meetings, which requires reviewing materials in advance. Particular value is placed on asking challenging questions that push us in new directions during debates. The group itself is very welcoming and inclusive, giving everyone a chance to speak. While occasionally things can get a little contentious, we embrace healthy conflict and respect each other greatly.
• There is committee work you can become involved in. There are three Board committees and several ad hoc committees to discuss topics of interest. Some amount of committee work is expected, but that varies from person to person. Some Board members can commit to an hour a week and some can do more. Everyone’s personal WIP limit is respected.
• Finally, every Board member is expected to attend the entire Agile20xx conference and represent Agile Alliance to members during that week. As a Board representative, you may have the opportunity to attend our other conferences as well. Board members are expected to represent the organization with all individuals and organizations they encounter.

Agile Alliance-related travel expenses are reimbursed (for transportation, hotel, dining, etc.) subject to the Agile Alliance expense policy. The organization is flexible and will make appropriate and necessary accommodations as needed.

What is the Board makeup?

Agile Alliance greatly values diversity and inclusivity. We actively strive to create a Board representative of our membership.

The current Board is comprised of women and men from all around the world. Professionally, we range from consultants to business owners to Agile practitioners to leaders of organizations practicing Agile. Learn more about the current Board here.

The organization elects new board members every year as current members reach the end of their terms. Agile Alliance publicizes the call for nominations as widely as possible and people from around the world are invited to nominate themselves or other interested candidates. Everyone is welcome and all have an equal chance to become part of the slate of candidates presented to members.
