Initiative Purpose
The purpose of this initiative is to assist economically emerging economies with affordable access to premium Agile events and speakers.
What is an Economically Emerging Economy?
It is an economy that is developing from a traditional economy (focused on agriculture and the export of raw materials) to a more advanced economy focused on industrialization (the use of machines instead of people to make things easier and cheaper).
In the absence of a single list of emerging economies, we are currently using the following list:
- Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Venezuela
- Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA): Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates
- Asia: Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand
These economies share common characteristics, such as:
- Lower than average per capita income
- Rapid growth (due to a focus on industrialization, usually undertaken by the leaders of the country to provide a better quality of life for their people)
- High volatility (especially due to currency fluctuations and natural disasters)
- Less mature capital markets (making it harder for companies to raise money in order to grow)
Why the focus on Economically Emerging Economies?
According to recent research by the World Bank, Human capital (the skills, experience, and effort of a population) is the world’s greatest asset. Investing in people leads to greater wealth and faster economic growth. Therefore, it is vital for emerging economies to build their human capital in order to prepare for a more technologically demanding future.
Unfortunately, in economically emerging countries, only major cities host local Agile conferences. Many individual practitioners are excluded due to location or financial reasons.
The intention is to build on local Agile knowledge and experience by:
- Providing an opportunity to learn that is not bound to a commercially motivated event, e.g. conference or training.
- Increasing knowledge sharing between the local and international Agile communities.
- Affording underserved communities access to international speakers and the broader Agile community.
How will we test the concept?
South Africa successfully piloted this concept in 2018. In 2019 We expanded to Colombia. Check out our reports
We will continue to expand to at least one new emerging economy each year.
What do we plan to do?
- Host at least one event (workshops, talks, open spaces, virtual sessions, etc.) per year in communities that are under-served by the local Agile conferences and training.
- Events will be arranged in partnership with existing local community groups to maximize the reach of the event as well as the diversity of material covered.
- Speakers will collaborate with local community members (with a strong focus on race, age, cultural, and gender diversity) to ensure knowledge transfer and the general advancement of the local community.
- After each event, new knowledge will be created for the broader local and Agile Alliance community in the form of a recorded broadcast and/or a report, and/or a blog (written by the local co-facilitator of the event) published on the Agile Alliance website.
